How to Build a Morning Routine: Start Small and Keep It Going

Last checked · Aria 1.1.4 · Written by LIPSON

Key answer Start a morning routine with two or three small actions you can do right after waking, in the same order every day. If you miss a day, just restart the next day, and once it feels natural after about two weeks, add one step at a time.

Why start a morning routine small?

Mornings have fixed departure times, so they are the least flexible part of the day. If you build an hour-long routine at the start, one late morning breaks the whole thing, and restarting the next day feels hard. Use one rule: begin with a length you can do even on your busiest day.

What should go into the routine?

Pick one from each of three types and even a short routine stays balanced.

How do I set the order and timing?

Fixing the order matters more than fixing the clock time. When the end of one action is the cue for the next, they follow each other without you having to think.

LengthOrderFor days like
10 minutesMake the bed (1) → glass of water (1) → stretch (5) → look at your top three tasks (3)Weekdays with an early start
20 minutesMake the bed (1) → wash up and drink water (4) → stretch (5) → write one line about today (5) → check events and tasks (5)Weekdays with a bit more room
40 minutesMake the bed (1) → walk or light exercise (20) → shower (10) → read a few pages (5) → check events and tasks (4)Weekends or work-from-home days

Give each step a start cue, an end rule and a busy-day version so it holds up. For a stretching step, for example:

What if I miss a day?

Keep just one rule: never miss twice in a row. After a missed day, restart with the 10-minute version. Even if your streak breaks, your longest streak stays recorded, so focus on starting again rather than the number. If it still does not work after two weeks, the routine is too big. Remove one step.

How can I sort out today's tasks in the morning too?

In Aria you can move from your routine to your first task of the day in one flow.

  1. Tap Follow along on the morning group in the Routine tab and the routine runs one step at a time with a circular timer. Set the estimated time for each step and you can see how much remains.
  2. On a busy day, check off the routine from the Home Screen Routine widget without opening the app.
  3. When the routine ends, listen to the morning briefing to hear today's events and what to do first.
  4. Start your first task with Start Timer. The remaining time shows on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island.

FAQ

How many minutes should a morning routine be?

There is no right answer, but the benchmark is a length you can keep even on your busiest weekday. Start at around 10 minutes, and once it holds for more than two weeks, add 5 to 10 minutes.

Do I have to wake up early, like in a 5 a.m. club?

Not necessarily. If you change your wake-up time a lot, waking up becomes a bigger challenge than the routine. Attach the routine to the time you already wake up first, and shift earlier gradually afterward if you want to. If you have sleep concerns, talk to a professional.

Can I do this without a routine app?

Yes. Write the order on paper, put it somewhere you will see it and mark the days you finish. An app helps by reducing the effort of checking, with step timers, streaks and widget check-offs.
