iPhone Reminders vs. a To-Do App: When the Built-In App Is Enough, and When to Switch

Last checked · Based on Aria 1.1.4 · Written by LIPSON, the maker of Aria.

Key answer If you have a handful of tasks a day and only use Apple devices, Reminders is enough. A dedicated to-do app starts to help when you want to re-plan a pile of overdue tasks at once, drag tasks onto a schedule, or pull tasks out of speech and photos. If you move to Aria, your original Reminders stay untouched.

This guide was written by LIPSON, the maker of Aria. Details for other apps come from their US App Store listings and official company pages as of October 17, 2026, and can change with updates. It is meant to help you choose, not to rank apps.

When is Reminders enough?

To get more out of Reminders, see How to use the Reminders app on iPhone.

When does Reminders start to feel limiting?

If two or more of these four happen every week, it may be time to try a dedicated to-do app.

  1. Cleaning up overdue tasks has become a chore. You open each overdue item and change its date one at a time.
  2. You want to decide when, not just by when. You want to place a task at a specific time today on a schedule, not only give it a due date.
  3. You retype a lot. You manually re-enter dates from a photo of a notice or a screenshot of a booking text.
  4. You want a morning summary. You want something to point out today’s events and what to do first.

How do they compare side by side?

Which fits better by situation. Reminders is based on its US App Store description and Apple’s user guide as of 2026-10-17, and Aria on version 1.1.4

FAQ

What is the difference between Reminders and Calendar?

Reminders holds to-dos you finish and check off, and Calendar holds appointments that happen at a set time. A reminder with a date can also be seen, created and completed in the Calendar app.

Can I sync Reminders with Google Calendar?

Reminders sync between Apple devices through iCloud and do not flow straight into Google Calendar. To see Google events on your iPhone, add your Google account to the iPhone Calendar (How to add Google Calendar to your iPhone).

Can I share a Reminders list with family?

Yes. You can share an iCloud Reminders list, edit it together and assign items to people. Aria has no shared lists, so we suggest keeping shared lists in Reminders.
